This is our take on a classic DIY grill, the wheel grill. Steel car wheels are made from heavy gauge steel which makes them a perfect receptacle for hot cooking coals! Our team has long admired home-made, improvised grills like this while traveling in Mexico. After running across a set of 4 wheels that were sitting out on the side of the road, we decided to finally make our own.
To elevate the aesthetic of the repurposed wheel, we've welded up a stand with steel hair-pin legs that lends a minimal midcentury vibe to the patio. An ash collection basket hangs from the top of the stand. The basket also offers a convenient method for coal-starting using fire starters. The grill can be topped with a flat-top griddle, a grate, or a 20" or larger wok.
An optional add-on, the Outer Band, provides a bold pop of color and shields the griller from intense coal heat.
Choose from three variants:
- DIY Wheel Grill Kit: Includes the stand, the grate, and the ash bowl. You supply and repurpose your own 15" steel car wheel.
- Wheel Grill, No Outer Band: Includes the stand, the grate, the ash bowl and a salvaged steel wheel that is ready to use.
- Wheel Grill, With Outer Band: Includes the stand, the grate, the ash bowl, a salvaged steel wheel, and a steel outer band the surrounds the wheel. Choose from the same colors available for the grill stand.
